The Ekiti State government has approved the promotion of 6,129 teaching and non-teaching staff in public secondary schools across the state. The promotion exercise, conducted through the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), was part of the recently concluded 2022/2023 promotion cycle.
Chairman of TESCOM, Mrs. Rhoda Ojo, made this known during an interactive session with secondary school principals in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. She revealed that 5,669 of the beneficiaries are teachers, while the remaining 460 are non-teaching staff. Promotion letters have already been dispatched to the affected staff.
Ojo expressed satisfaction that the disputes among some teachers’ groups, which had previously delayed the promotion process, had been resolved. She urged the newly promoted staff to show commitment and dedication to their duties as a way of appreciating the government’s efforts.
Additionally, she emphasized the need for school principals to maintain discipline in their schools, warning that the state government would not tolerate hooliganism, violence, or any form of misconduct among students.
“The government will continue to recognize and reward outstanding principals and teachers, but those who show indolence and ineptitude will face necessary sanctions,” Ojo stated.
In his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Teachers’ Affairs, Fatai Oluyede, reassured teachers that the outstanding arrears of the 2017 leave bonuses were receiving government attention. He called on teachers to support Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s vision for the education sector.
Leaders of key education unions in the state, including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Chairman, Comrade Bamidele Daodu; the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) Chairman, Comrade Sola Adigun; and the Chairman of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Akinbode Oke, commended the government’s efforts. They pledged that their members would meet the state’s educational expectations while advocating for training programs to enhance teachers’ skills and modernize teaching techniques.
The promotion exercise aligns with the Ekiti State government’s broader strategy to improve the quality of education and boost the morale of educators, ensuring better academic outcomes for students in public secondary schools.
