The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has successfully passed a bill to establish the Akwa Ibom State University of Education.

The bill was approved following deliberations and the adoption of a report presented by Kenim Onofiok, Chairperson of the House Committee on Education.

In her presentation, Ms. Onofiok emphasized that the proposed university aims to deliver high-quality teacher education programs for the state. She highlighted that the institution would provide additional opportunities for Akwa Ibom indigenes seeking admission into degree-awarding institutions.

“Students are no longer interested in registering for the three-year NCE programmes offered by colleges of education,” Ms. Onofiok explained, underscoring the need for a dedicated university of education.

The motion for the bill’s adoption was moved by the House Leader, Sunday Johnny, and seconded by the Deputy Chief Whip, Sampson Idiong.

Following the passage of the bill, Speaker Udeme Otong directed the Clerk of the House, NsikakAbasi Orok, to transmit a copy of the bill to Governor Umo Eno for assent.

The establishment of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education is expected to expand educational opportunities in the state and enhance the training of qualified teachers for the region.
