The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, has issued a strong warning to newly admitted students, urging them to steer clear of cultism, academic misconduct, and other antisocial behaviors during their time at the institution.
Speaking at the university’s 13th matriculation ceremony held on Monday at the temporary campus in Adankolo, Lokoja, Akinwumi emphasized the university’s firm stance on discipline and academic integrity.
“Let me be clear, this university has zero tolerance for laziness, academic misconduct, or deviant behaviours. Any student who fails to live up to the expectations of academic diligence and discipline will be shown the way out,” the VC said. “I say this not to scare you, but to prepare your minds for the serious business ahead.”
He congratulated the newly admitted students, describing them as the fortunate few selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants.
“You are indeed among the privileged few selected from a large pool of applicants who aspired to study in this esteemed institution. Your admission is not a matter of chance but a reflection of your hard work and commitment,” he said. “This remarkable achievement is worth celebrating, and we are proud to welcome you into the Federal University Lokoja family.”
A total of 7,571 new students were officially welcomed into the university for the new academic session.
Professor Akinwumi reminded the students that earning a degree from the institution requires more than academic excellence. “To be awarded a degree by this university, you must be found worthy in learning and in character. Academic excellence without good conduct is not sufficient.”
He urged the students to avoid all social vices that could derail their academic journey and tarnish their future.
“This is why I urge you to shun all forms of social vices such as cultism, indecent dressing, examination malpractices, sexual misbehavior, drug abuse, and any form of antisocial behavior that can mar or jeopardize your future,” he stated.
The matriculation ceremony marked a significant milestone for the students as they formally became members of the university community, with university authorities reiterating their commitment to maintaining a safe, disciplined, and academically driven environment.
