The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced that 24 federal institutions across Nigeria have been successfully powered by solar energy under the “Energising Education Project,” a key initiative of President Bola Tinubu’s administration aimed at improving power supply in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Speaking during a collaboration agreement signing ceremony in Abuja with vice chancellors of beneficiary universities, Dr. Alausa confirmed that an additional eight universities have now signed up to join the fourth phase of the solar power project.
“This milestone marks a major step in our mission to create more sustainable and conducive learning environments across Nigerian universities,” Alausa said. “By embracing clean energy solutions, we are not only cutting energy costs but also ensuring that our institutions are less dependent on the national grid.”
The event followed an inspection tour of the solar-powered energy facility at the University of Abuja, which has recently been renamed Yakubu Gowon University. The tour provided a firsthand look at the impact of the project, which includes uninterrupted power supply to classrooms, laboratories, and student hostels.
The Energising Education Project, launched to tackle long-standing electricity challenges in higher institutions, is being implemented in phases with support from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and various international partners.
University leaders at the event praised the initiative, noting improved academic productivity, reduced generator dependence, and a better quality of life for students and staff.
The eight new institutions entering Phase IV of the project are expected to begin implementation in the coming months.
