Renowned theatre scholar and former university teacher, Professor Matthew Umukoro, will mark his 75th birthday on Friday, May 17, with a special lecture event at the University of Ibadan (UI). Fondly known as “M.M.” by colleagues and students, Prof. Umukoro is celebrated for his distinguished academic career spanning nearly four decades.
Prof. Umukoro retired from the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Ibadan, in May 2020 after dedicating over 40 years to teaching, mentoring, and advancing the field of dramatic arts in Nigeria. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation for excellence in teaching, critical writing, and cultural advocacy.
To commemorate his milestone birthday, Prof. Umukoro will deliver a public lecture titled “In Defence of Criticism” at the iconic Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, on Friday at 3 p.m. The event is expected to attract scholars, former students, and theatre enthusiasts from across the country to honor a man whose work has significantly shaped Nigeria’s academic and cultural landscape.
