Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have declared their intention to join the mass protest scheduled by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The protest is in response to the continued closure of public primary schools in the nation’s capital, which have remained shut for over two months due to unresolved disputes between the FCT Administration and Local Government Education Authorities.

A senior official of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), who preferred anonymity, confirmed the development, stating, “We, the primary school teachers, will be joining the NANS-organised protest next tomorrow by God’s grace.” The source also accused the FCT Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Stephen Knabayi, of sabotaging their efforts, alleging that his actions appear aligned with government interests rather than supporting the teachers’ cause.

NANS had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to resolve the impasse, but the deadline has since passed without action. In a protest notice dated June 30 and signed by its president, Olushola Oladoja, the student body condemned the prolonged shutdown as a “deliberate act of negligence” that has denied thousands of children, especially from low-income backgrounds, their right to basic education. The association has called for full mobilisation of students, civil society groups, and education activists from FCT and neighbouring states for the protest, demanding the immediate reopening of all affected schools.
