A large contingent of students from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, took to the streets on Wednesday to protest Governor Seyi Makinde’s announcement that the institution would be renamed in honour of his predecessor, the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo. Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the demonstrators argued that the renaming was undemocratic and that their views had been ignored in the decision-making process.

In interviews with protesting students, many expressed frustration that the governor failed to consult the polytechnic community—including students, staff, and alumni—before declaring the name change. “We respect Dr. Olunloyo’s contributions, but this move disrespects our history and identity,. “If our institution must be renamed, let it come from a transparent, community-driven process.”

Governor Makinde’s office has yet to respond directly to the protest, but in a statement announcing the renaming last week, the governor cited Dr. Olunloyo’s legacy of educational advocacy and development in Oyo State. With student unrest mounting, stakeholders are calling for an immediate dialogue between the government, the polytechnic’s governing council, and the student body to seek a resolution that balances honouring past leaders with preserving institutional unity.
