President Bola Tinubu has announced the commencement of a scholarship programme for students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to study in Nigerian universities, beginning with the next academic year. The initiative, part of a broader cooperation framework between Nigeria and the OECS, was unveiled during a joint press conference with Saint Lucian Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre in Gros Islet on Monday, following a high-level luncheon with OECS leaders.

The scholarship programme aims to strengthen people-to-people ties while expanding opportunities in education, trade, and development between Nigeria and the Caribbean bloc. President Tinubu emphasized the importance of practical collaboration and announced the formation of a joint implementation committee comprising representatives from Nigeria and OECS member states to finalise modalities for the rollout. “The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States is very close to us in Africa,” Tinubu said. “We are moving forward, and we won’t drop the ball.”

In addition to the scholarship scheme, discussions are underway to implement visa waivers for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries. Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the educational partnership, describing it as a “timely and practical expression of solidarity,” and confirmed that visa facilitation and enhanced cooperation in trade, tourism, and air connectivity are top priorities for the joint Nigeria–OECS committee.

Earlier in the day, President Tinubu addressed a special joint session of Saint Lucia’s Parliament, where he outlined his vision for a new chapter of engagement with OECS nations. Both leaders expressed confidence in the swift implementation of the agreements, which they believe will foster deeper economic, cultural, and educational ties between Nigeria and the Eastern Caribbean region.
