The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities for one week in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2025, in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 82.

In an official statement released today, the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the former President and announced the immediate suspension of plenary and committee sessions across both chambers until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July 2025,” the statement read.

Lawmakers have been directed to adjust all engagements to ensure full participation in the upcoming burial rites and national mourning activities.

The statement further conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the National Assembly to the government and people of Nigeria, Katsina State, and the Buhari family, especially his widow and children.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity. May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

The death of Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a two-term civilian President from 2015 to 2023, marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics. He was widely regarded as a symbol of anti-corruption and national discipline, though his administration also faced significant criticism on issues of insecurity and economic challenges.
