The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling cultism and social vices among young people by investing in quality education and teacher empowerment. The state says its strategy is to ensure every child is properly taught, trained, and developed to become future leaders.
Speaking on the sidelines of the NEPL/Seplat Empowerment Programme for teachers in Edo and Delta States, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, emphasized the importance of education in building a better and safer society. He said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration is taking deliberate steps to equip schools and recruit more teachers to support this goal.
Dr. Iyamu noted that the state is fully aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s push to promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), especially with the introduction of incentives to boost enrolment. He stressed that technical education is now a key priority in Edo’s education roadmap.
“We can no longer rely solely on certificates,” he said. “Those interested in technical education are being encouraged, particularly with the stipends that come with it. Governor Okpebholo is committed to any initiative that advances the course of the Edo child. We are driving the change.”
He praised Seplat Energy for organizing the teacher training programme, acknowledging the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of children. “We want to make sure our teachers are operating at a level of excellence. The quality of every child depends, in large part, on the quality of their teacher,” he said.
Dr. Iyamu added that the administration is focused on developing a generation of young people who can contribute meaningfully to the growth of the state, rather than fall prey to negative influences. “We are building schools, employing teachers, and supporting reforms that aim to make cultism and other social vices unattractive. This is the kind of change we are committed to as a government.”
