The Katsina State Children’s Parliament has called on the state government to domesticate the National Policy for Violence-Free Schools, Safety, and Security to ensure schools become safe spaces for learning.

The 34-member parliament made the call on Monday during its plenary at the Katsina State House of Assembly chamber, presided over by its Speaker, Fadila Sani.

The motion, sponsored by Halimatu Idris representing Malumfashi, highlighted the urgent need to adapt the national framework into a workable state-level policy that prioritises the security and well-being of pupils and teachers. She stressed that without safety in schools, the future of children’s education and development would remain at risk.

“Violence in schools has significant negative impacts on children’s well-being and educational outcomes. Domestication of the policy is crucial to protecting children and ensuring a supportive learning environment,” Idris said.

Similarly, Asiya Rabe, representing Maiadua, urged the government to fast-track the implementation of the child protection, disability, and Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) laws, saying their enforcement would safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, and persons with disabilities.

In another motion, Asiya Ridwan, representing Dutsi, called on the state to urgently tackle the effects of climate change by creating an anticipatory action plan to mitigate its impact on already affected communities.

After extensive deliberations, the parliament adopted the motions and urged the government to take necessary steps.

The plenary was supported by Save the Children International (SCI) through the Education Cannot Wait-funded project, aimed at amplifying children’s voices in governance and decision-making.
