The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has restated its commitment to strengthening education and human capacity development across the Niger Delta, pledging continued investments in literacy as a foundation for regional growth.
The deputy director of Education, Health and Social Services at NDDC, Mrs. Florence Ediagbonya, gave the assurance during a sensitisation rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, held as part of activities marking International Literacy Day.
Explaining the essence of the event, Ediagbonya said the walk was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of literacy and highlighting the Commission’s ongoing initiatives to promote education in the Niger Delta.
She outlined several interventions introduced under the leadership of NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku. These include foreign and local postgraduate scholarship programmes, distribution of tablets and learning materials to schools, and infrastructural projects such as classroom construction, hostel development, and the provision of desks and other school facilities across communities in the region.
“This sensitisation is not only important to the NDDC but also to the world,” she stated. “Literacy is the bedrock of development and a fundamental human right. Every individual deserves the basic ability to read, write, speak, and communicate.”
Ediagbonya reaffirmed the Commission’s determination to ensure that communities in the Niger Delta are not excluded from the global pursuit of literacy, commending Dr. Ogbuku for empowering the Education Directorate to scale up efforts in this regard.
“Literacy is the bedrock of development; it is a fundamental human right. Every human being on earth is supposed to be literate,” she stressed.
