The Benue State House of Assembly has re-amended the law that renamed Benue State University, Makurdi, opting for a shorter title—Father Adasu University, Makurdi.

The change, which was effected during plenary on Thursday after the debate on the report of the House Standing Committee on Higher Education, replaces the earlier name, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, adopted in December 2024.

Leading the debate, the Majority Leader, Hon. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), argued that the previous name was too long and unwieldy. According to him, “a university of such stature deserves a simpler, more memorable identity.”

The Speaker, Hon. Alfred Emberga, who presided over the session, directed the Clerk of the House, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the bill for the third time, after which it was passed.

In the same sitting, the Assembly also passed amendments upgrading the College of Education, Katsina-Ala, and the College of Education, Oju, into full-fledged degree-awarding institutions—another step lawmakers say will expand access to higher education in the state.

With this move, Benue’s premier university now bears the name of its founder, the late Father Moses Orshio Adasu, in a simpler form, while the state also strengthens its higher education landscape.
