No teacher will henceforth be allowed to stand before a classroom in Nigeria without proper registration and licensing by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the Federal Government has declared.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement in Abuja through a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade. He said the move is part of far-reaching reforms to professionalize teaching and guarantee that every child in the country is taught by qualified and competent teachers.

According to him, new operational guidelines have been introduced for both TRCN and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) to strengthen governance, accountability, and oversight. While TRCN will enforce mandatory teacher registration, licensing, digital integration, and discipline within the profession, NTI will focus on implementing distance-based teacher training programmes that meet national standards.

Describing the reform as “a big day for the Nigerian child,” Alausa stressed that the initiative is designed to embed professionalism, expand continuous training opportunities, and ensure compliance across all levels of education. He assured that the ministry will work with states, private school owners, and stakeholders to ensure successful implementation, calling the reform “Renewed Hope in Action” for the education sector.
