The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet its seven-point demands or risk a fresh round of industrial action. The decision followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.

In a strike notice signed by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union decried what it described as the government’s neglect of the university system and persistent refusal to honour agreements. Piwuna warned that failure to act within the ultimatum period would compel the union to commence with a two-week warning strike, before escalating to a total and indefinite strike.

ASUU’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding and revitalisation of public universities, an end to the alleged victimisation of members at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO, as well as payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears. The union is also insisting on the settlement of promotion arrears spanning four years and the remittance of unpaid third-party deductions.

It will be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education recently set up a committee led by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals and restore stability in the sector. However, the committee has yet to release its report, raising fears that the long-standing dispute may once again plunge the university system into paralysis.
