The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has declared that it is not part of the two-week warning strike declared by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), urging its members nationwide to continue their teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities without interruption.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its National President, Comrade Niyi Sunmonu, the union said the clarification became necessary to dispel “misinformation” circulating on social media and other platforms, which had created confusion among students and academic staff.
“CONUA has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” Sunmonu stated. “This clarification is therefore issued to set the record straight.”
The union emphasized that it has no reason to embark on a strike, recalling that when the Federal Government inaugurated the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement in October 2024, it was excluded. Following a formal protest, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, assured the union during a meeting on September 11, 2025, that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.
CONUA confirmed that the Ministry of Education has since fulfilled this promise by expanding the committee to accommodate the union. “Until CONUA is formally brought to the table and any of the issues it has presented to the Federal Government become subjects of dispute, there is no foundation whatsoever for any strike action by CONUA,” the statement read.
The union also called on Vice-Chancellors to ensure the safety and protection of its members as they continue their legitimate duties.
“We equally encourage students to remain focused on their academic pursuits without fear of interruption,” the union added. “CONUA stands by its commitment to quality education, national development, and peaceful industrial relations in the university system.”
The union reaffirmed its commitment to academic stability and constructive engagement with the government and other stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education sector.
