The Federal Government has launched the Federal Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP), a new digital system designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and data-driven governance across Nigeria’s higher education sector.
Unveiling the platform on Tuesday in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the initiative represents a major step toward restoring public trust and ensuring that funding and resource allocation in tertiary institutions are based on evidence and performance.
According to Alausa, the FTIGTP will, for the first time, provide a unified, real-time database that captures key information such as student enrollment, government funding (capital, recurrent, and personnel), research grants, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) allocations, Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) interventions, and institutional performance indicators.
“This is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing accountability and good governance. Nigerians will now be able to see how resources are used and what benefits are derived from investments in our tertiary education system,” Alausa said.
He explained that the platform would serve as an authoritative source of financial and operational data on tertiary institutions, promoting financial transparency, improving resource allocation, discouraging misuse of funds, and strengthening institutional trust.
The minister directed all vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts to comply with the mandatory annual data submission schedule (first quarter of every year) on the platform. He added that institutions must now obtain an ICT clearance certificate from the ministry before receiving any TETFund ICT interventions.
“FTIGTP is a reform instrument to promote transparency, efficiency, and result-based management of resources across the education sector,” Alausa noted. “Funding, support, and interventions will increasingly be tied to transparency and accountability metrics.”
He described the platform’s rollout as a “bold step toward rebuilding public trust”, emphasizing that it would help position Nigeria’s tertiary education system as globally competitive and innovation-driven.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described FTIGTP as a transformative tool that supports the ministry’s digital transformation agenda and enhances data-driven decision-making in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
“Today represents a significant step forward in promoting transparency, accountability, and evidence-based planning in Nigeria’s tertiary education system,” Ahmad said. “Accurate and accessible data is essential for effective governance, performance monitoring, and resource allocation.”
She urged all institutions to fully utilize and regularly update the portal to ensure its sustainability and long-term impact.
The launch of FTIGTP marks a new phase in the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving governance, accountability, and efficiency within Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.
