Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has approved the recruitment of 500 qualified teachers into the state civil service as part of his administration’s ongoing reforms to revive and strengthen the education sector.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Zamfara State Civil Service Commission and Recruitment Committee, Hon. Aliyu Mohammed Tutur, who described the recruitment process as “rigorous and transparent.”
According to Tutur, a total of 11,708 applicants registered through the state’s online portal. Of this number, 8,184 met the eligibility criteria and were screened, while 3,105 participated in a Computer-Based Test conducted under strict supervision. Based on the 40 per cent benchmark, 1,033 candidates qualified for the final oral interview.
“After evaluation by subject panelists, 500 candidates were recommended for appointment across the state,” Tutur explained, adding that the recruitment targeted key subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Studies, Entrepreneurship, Agricultural Science, Home Economics, and Animal Husbandry.
He further outlined the steps taken during the recruitment process, which included the creation of clear recruitment guidelines, the establishment of an online application portal, thorough screening and verification of credentials, a merit-based computer-based test, and a final interview stage focused on equity and quality.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology praised Governor Lawal for his steadfast commitment to revitalising education, describing the recruitment as a milestone achievement that underscores his determination to restore quality and merit to the teaching profession.
“This exercise is a strong statement of the governor’s resolve to close the gap in qualified teaching personnel and enhance learning outcomes in public schools,” the ministry noted.
The committee also assured that appointment letters would soon be issued to the successful candidates, who will be deployed across the state — with special emphasis on rural and underserved communities — to ensure equitable access to quality education.
“This development marks a milestone in the governor’s education reform agenda, aimed at promoting merit-based employment, improving teacher quality, and restoring public confidence in Zamfara’s education system,” Tutur said.
Governor Lawal’s administration has repeatedly pledged to prioritise education as the foundation of sustainable development in Zamfara, and the recruitment of new teachers is seen as a crucial step toward achieving that goal.
