Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has deployed no fewer than 1,600 newly recruited watchmen to enhance security across secondary schools in the state, a decisive move coming just hours after the deadly attack on a government girls’ school in the Maga community of Kebbi State, where a vice principal was killed and 25 students abducted.

Speaking during the distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to the watchmen and 400 newly hired mathematics teachers, Governor Yusuf said ensuring a safe learning environment for students and educators remains a top priority of his administration. He stressed that academic progress is impossible where safety is compromised.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor described the deployment as a major stride toward restoring safety, discipline and stability in Kano’s public schools. He noted that the watchmen will serve as frontline protectors—guarding school premises, monitoring unauthorised activities and supporting the smooth running of academic activities.

Governor Yusuf urged the appointees to carry out their duties with vigilance, discipline and integrity, stressing that their presence will help rebuild confidence in school security across the state.
