The Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, has returned to academic life after enrolling as a 200-level student in the Faculty of Law at Northwest University Kano.
The traditional ruler joined other undergraduates for lectures on Tuesday, drawing attention as he attended classes in his trademark regal attire—a flowing black gown paired with a white turban—blending royalty with the routine of campus life.
His enrolment followed the university’s decision to grant him special admission into its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Common and Sharia Law, a move the institution said was based on his extensive background in governance, economics, and public service.
Founded in 2012, Northwest University is one of the two state-owned universities in Kano State, and the presence of the Emir on campus has generated widespread interest among students and academics alike.
Despite his status as a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and a holder of a PhD, Sanusi has remained a strong advocate of education, social reform, and intellectual engagement. His return to the classroom, observers say, reinforces his commitment to lifelong learning and underscores his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most influential—and sometimes controversial—public intellectuals.
