The Wife of the Governor of Oyo State, Mrs. Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde, on Monday empowered public school students with writing materials, describing education as the most enduring legacy that can be handed down to future generations.
The presentation, held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan, was part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Oyo State. The initiative deliberately placed children at the heart of the Oyo@50 celebrations, underscoring the administration’s belief that the state’s long-term growth and stability depend on the quality of education given to its young population.
Addressing students, teachers, and stakeholders, Mrs. Makinde reminded the beneficiaries that they are the true owners of the future Oyo State, urging them to take their education seriously. She noted that hard work, discipline, and commitment to learning would prepare them to inherit and advance the state.
She expressed appreciation to teachers and members of the Oyo@50 Anniversary Planning Committee for supporting the programme, stressing that education remains the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.
According to her, an educated child is better equipped to rise above limitations, speak confidently, make informed decisions, and play a responsible role in shaping the future of the state. She urged the students to make effective use of the stationery items distributed and to develop strong reading habits that would enhance their academic performance.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Oyo State’s future, noting that access to basic learning materials is essential for improved educational outcomes. He said the programme reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening public education and ensuring that no child is left behind.
Olayiwola also commended teachers for their dedication and encouraged students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their studies.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Oyo@50 Anniversary Planning Committee, Hon. Saheed Akinade Fijabi, explained that the Golden Jubilee celebration was designed not only to celebrate the state’s achievements over the past five decades but also to deliberately invest in its future. He noted that programmes targeting children were intentionally included in the anniversary activities because they represent the next generation of leaders.
The event was enlivened by quiz competitions and dance performances by students from various schools, adding colour, excitement, and youthful energy to the milestone celebration.
