The Abia State Government has unveiled the Education Management and Information System (EMIS) and the Abia State Basic Learning Identity Number (ABSLIN) to strengthen data management and improve learner tracking across the state.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Goodluck Ubochi, announced the initiative on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held in Umuahia.
Ubochi explained that the new system would enable the government to monitor each learner’s academic journey from entry into school through the completion of basic education, ensuring proper documentation and improved oversight.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, said EMIS was designed to centralise and digitally integrate education data from both public and private schools across the state.
According to Kanu, the platform will warehouse data at the basic and secondary levels into a unified database, thereby enhancing planning, measurable outcomes, and evidence-based policy decisions.
He disclosed that all public and private schools across Abia’s 17 local government areas have been issued secure login credentials to access the platform.
Kanu added that EMIS supports the issuance of ABSLIN — a unique identification number assigned to every pupil in the state — which will help streamline record-keeping and ensure accurate learner identification.
On teacher recruitment, Kanu revealed that 36,415 applications were received in the second batch of the ongoing exercise, with 24,023 candidates shortlisted for the computer-based test (CBT). He said the CBT date would be announced in due course.
He noted that 5,394 teachers had already been employed in the first phase of the recruitment exercise, while 4,000 teachers are expected to be hired in the second batch.
The commissioner further announced the resumption of the Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme for the 2025–2026 academic session across all 17 local government areas. He said a sensitisation campaign is underway to boost enrolment, particularly among school dropouts, traders, and artisans.
Highlighting recent achievements, Kanu said Abia emerged overall best at the National Basic Education School Sports Games, clinching eight gold medals in athletics. The trophies were presented to Governor Alex Otti during the Executive Council meeting, and the governor has pledged to host the victorious team.
He also stated that Abia has ranked best in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations for three consecutive years, describing the feat as clear evidence that the administration’s education reforms are producing measurable results.
