The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reaffirmed that semester examinations at the institution will proceed as scheduled despite a directive by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNILAG chapter, asking its members to withdraw their services over alleged unpaid allowances.

The union had, during its congress held on Tuesday, March 10, resolved to suspend academic activities in protest against what it described as the non-payment of Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances. The decision sparked concerns among students about possible disruption to the ongoing examinations.

However, in a statement issued late Tuesday by the university’s Communication Unit and signed by its Head, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the management said the examinations would continue as planned.

According to the statement, the university had taken note of the union’s directive but maintained that due process was not followed before the announcement of the strike action.

The management further explained that it had continued to engage with the leadership of ASUU at the university level in a bid to resolve the issues raised while ensuring that the interests of both staff and students were protected.

The statement emphasised the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic stability and preventing unnecessary disruptions to the academic calendar.

The management therefore reassured students and other stakeholders that necessary measures were being put in place to ensure that the ongoing examinations are conducted smoothly while discussions with the union continue.

The development comes amid ongoing concerns within Nigerian universities over the implementation and payment of various allowances owed to academic staff.
