Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore said his government will prioritise education and will make education free at all levels if elected president in 2023.

Pan-African writers advocate literature in medical education

A medical doctor and Secretary-General of the Pan-African Writers Association, Dr Wale Okediran has called on the stakeholders in the education sector to incorporate literature into the medical studies curriculum.

Okediran said literature was significant to the study of medicine, particularly when it comes to the relationship between the patients and doctors.

Salary cut: FG’s action inhumane, say lecturers

Last week it was reported that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities received only half of their monthly salaries.

Some of these lecturers who spoke with The PUNCH said that the Federal Government’s action was inhumane, illogical and could lead to a massive brain drain in the educator sector as witnessed in the health sector.

CSOs fault removal of sex education from curriculum

Civil Society Organisations on Tuesday faulted the directive by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to the National Educational Research Development Council to remove sex education from the Nigerian educational curriculum.

The Executive Director, Education as a Vaccine, Mrs Toyin Chukwudozie, on behalf of 53 organisations, in a statement in Abuja disgreed with the directive.

Medical students educate Lagos residents on cancer

A socio-philanthropic organisation of medical students of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, KB Klub, has provided free breast and cervical screening for women and young girls in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

According to a statement on Tuesday, the medical group also provided free mosquito nets and drugs to mothers and their infants, as well as men in the local council.

FUOYE gets community’s support

The Federal University, Oye Ekiti has been reassured of support and cooperation by its host community, Oye Ekiti, towards achieving peace, growth and accelerated development of the institution.

The Oloye of Oye Ekiti, Oba Michael Ademolaju, who said the community had, since the establishment of FUOYE in 2010, been doing a lot to ensure peaceful co-existence between them, assured the university management and students that the community would not relent in its efforts.

CU leads UI, UNILAG in world varsity ranking

Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, is ahead of the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos in the latest 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

A look at the ranking parameters indicates that Covenant is leading all Nigerian universities in Research and currently ranks 562 globally.

ASUU must be paid Full Salaries, Falana Tells FG

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to direct public universities to pay members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) their full salaries.

Some members of the union which recently called off their eight-month strike had complained of getting half salaries for October 2022.

Ibadan Poly Expels Student, Suspends Two Others For Abduction, Armed Robbery

The authorities of The Polytechnic, Ibadan (TPI), have suspended and expelled two of its students, Beyioku Richard of ND II Mass Communication Department and Oyewole Dotun of ND II Local Government Development Studies for allegedly kidnapping an HND 1 Public Administration student, as well as assaulting a security officer of the institution.

This was contained in statement made available to Nigerian Tribune and signed by the registrar of the polytechnic, Mrs Modupe Theresa Fawale.

FIRS remits N309b education tax to TETFund

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has remitted over N309 billion from education taxation to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The revenue generated by FIRS from across tertiary education institutions in the country between January and September 2022 exceeded the N305 billion budgeted for the full year.
