The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has maintained its position as the most preferred higher institution by candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from 2020 to 2023. This revelation emerged during an ongoing policy meeting chaired by Andrew Adejoh, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

According to data provided by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), UNILORIN secured the top spot in first choice applications for the past four years, with a significant lead over other institutions. In the 2023 UTME, UNILORIN topped the list of preferred universities, followed closely by the University of Lagos and the Lagos State University.

The consistent high number of applications to UNILORIN reflects its popularity among prospective students seeking quality higher education in Nigeria. Despite competition from other prestigious institutions, UNILORIN’s appeal remains unrivaled, drawing candidates from across the country.

UNILORIN’s appeal is attributed to several factors, including its track record of uninterrupted academic sessions without strikes, unlike many other public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This stability has earned UNILORIN a reputation for reliability and consistency in delivering quality education. As UTME candidates continue to prioritize their choices for higher education, UNILORIN’s continued dominance underscores its standing as a premier institution in Nigeria’s academic landscape.
