Abia State government has reiterated its commitment to providing free and compulsory basic education in public schools, cautioning that anyone caught extorting parents for pupil enrollment will face legal consequences.

This declaration was made by Lady Lydia Onuoha, Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), during an event enrolling 29 out-of-school children at Community Primary School in Umuala-Nsulu, Isialangwa North LGA.

The event, facilitated by Caritas Nigeria in partnership with state ministries and educational bodies, also marked the launch of the Education Trust Fund aimed at supporting these pupils.

Onuoha emphasized Governor Alex Otti’s plans to upgrade public schools, enhancing facilities and ensuring security to match private institutions’ standards. The government is focused on creating a no-cost learning environment for all children.

Caritas Nigeria’s Technical Officer, Mrs. Naomi Thompson, highlighted the NGO’s long-term partnership with Abia State to reintegrate out-of-school children into the educational system. Community leaders, including Eze Patrick Anaba and parents, expressed their gratitude for the initiative and pledged to support local efforts to improve education in the area.
