Prof. Muyiwa Odusanya, Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) in Ikorodu, Lagos, has underscored the importance of leveraging the latest technologies to improve farming and agricultural business in Nigeria.

His remarks were made during the opening of the 36th Farm Management Association of Nigeria (FAMAN) conference, held from October 7 to 11, 2024, at the university campus.

Highlighting the conference theme, “Emerging Technologies and Agricultural Development in Nigeria: The Way Forward,” Odusanya noted that the theme reflects the urgent need for innovation and technological advancement among researchers and field operators.

He introduced the university’s initiatives encapsulated in the acronym IMPACT—Infrastructural Development, Manpower Training and Development, Productivity and Prosperity of the University Community, A Strong University Culture of Academic Excellence, and Town-Gown and Industry Partnership. He emphasized LASUSTECH’s commitment to agricultural business, citing the successful production of tomatoes from the university farm as a key outcome.

Prof. Usman Haruna, President of FAMAN, stressed the necessity of transitioning from subsistence farming and rudimentary technologies to modern agricultural practices. He called for a paradigm shift toward embracing technological innovations to enhance farm productivity and ensure national self-sufficiency.

“Modern technologies in agriculture, including precision agriculture, biotechnology, drones, and artificial intelligence, are crucial for improving efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in agricultural systems,” he stated, urging that agricultural policy should prioritize smallholder farmers, who play a vital role in feeding the population.

Dr. Ola Tayo Michael Ogunbanwo, Acting Dean of the College of Agriculture at LASUSTECH, expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for his effective leadership and commitment to maintaining industrial harmony at the university. He expressed hope that the conference would yield critical insights and contributions to the advancement of agriculture in Nigeria.
