The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have criticized the inauguration of the government’s renegotiation committee, calling it a biased process.

In a joint statement by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the unions expressed dismay over the committee’s focus on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing the government of sidelining other unions.

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, announced the committee, led by Yayale Ahmed, to renegotiate the 2009 agreements within three months. However, the unions claim that their role was minimized during the inauguration, describing the event as a mere formality to legitimize a process centered on ASUU.

Meanwhile, the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has demanded representation in the renegotiation process, accusing the Ministry of Education of sidelining the union despite its legal recognition and active membership in the university system.
