The House of Representatives has donated N20 million to the family of Hassan Makuku, the late Vice Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, who was killed during a bandit attack last week.

Makuku lost his life while attempting to shield students as armed men invaded the school and abducted more than two dozen girls in one of the latest incidents in the country’s renewed wave of violent attacks.

Leading a high-powered delegation to Kebbi on Monday, Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, described Makuku’s action as an extraordinary display of courage and selflessness. He urged Governor Nasir Idris to immortalise the fallen educator by renaming the school in his honour.

“This is somebody who died in active service, whose heroic conduct cost him his life,” Abbas said, according to a statement issued by his media aide, Musa Krishi. “He died trying to shield the students from the kidnappers. What he did is an example of what every public servant should emulate.”

The Speaker prayed for Allah to grant Makuku eternal rest and called on the state government to “set an example” by giving the late vice principal a befitting honour. He added that the House’s N20 million support was intended to help the bereaved family “get a small capital to start a business now that their breadwinner is gone.”

Abbas described the incident as a painful setback at a time when both the state government and President Bola Tinubu’s administration are intensifying efforts to strengthen national security.

“This incident came as a rude shock to all of us,” he said. “But it is also a wake-up call to think outside the box on how we can collectively contain this big devil of insecurity that has bedevilled our nation.”

The Speaker reassured citizens that the House would continue collaborating with relevant agencies to tackle the rising insecurity and ensure safer communities across the country.
