A non-governmental organisation, PATH To Follow: Basic Moral and Civic Knowledge Project, has called for deliberate policies and programmes to ensure the full integration of physically challenged children into activities critical to their development.
The call was made by the organisation’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Disability Inclusion Programme Officer, Pastor Oghenerukevwe Lucky, during a visit to the FCT School for the Blind in Jabi, Abuja.
Pastor Lucky expressed concern over the continued neglect of physically challenged persons by some individuals and organisations, noting that their needs go beyond the provision of food and other basic items. He stressed the importance of equipping them with moral and civic knowledge to help them thrive in society.
According to him, the project is designed to empower such children through structured initiatives, including lectures and oral quizzes focused on moral and civic education. He added that exceptional pupils would be rewarded with scholarships, gifts, and other incentives.
“We are intentional about equipping these children with the knowledge they need, not just for today but for their future,” he said, urging the pupils to take advantage of the initiative.
In his remarks, the Vice Head Teacher of the school, Mr. Osai, commended the organisation for its intervention and encouraged students to actively participate in the programme to maximise its benefits.
The organisation also urged parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to support initiatives that promote the holistic development of children.
Speaking at the Inter-House Sports event of Adventist Model School in Abuja, the project coordinator, Chikezie Allwell Chinkata, criticised the tendency of some parents to impose career choices on their children without considering their natural talents and abilities.
He emphasised the need to prioritise moral and civic education as a foundation for lifelong success, while encouraging stakeholders to nurture children based on their unique potentials.
Also speaking, the Head Teacher of the school, Mr. Manseh Alabura, highlighted the role of extracurricular activities such as sports in character building, noting that they promote discipline, unity, and fairness among pupils.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive education and value-based learning across schools in the FCT and beyond.
