The Minister for Education Tahir Mamman OON, SAN, today inaugurated the Committee tasked with developing a roadmap for the education sector in Nigeria.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Conference Room of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, the minister stated that the event marked a pivotal moment in the nation’s pursuit of educational excellence and societal development. He highlighted the urgency of their mission, emphasizing the need for clear direction to transform Nigeria’s fortunes.
Acknowledging the challenging road ahead, the Minister emphasized that Nigerians eagerly anticipate a quick turnaround in all sectors under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, with education as a cornerstone for positive change.
According to Mamman, President Tinubu’s vision for his administration, focused on improving the lives of Nigerians and fostering compassion, underscores the importance of the education sector in addressing societal issues.
Specifically, he pointed that President Tinubu’s commitment to retrain 10.5 million Nigerian out-of-school children with valuable skills places education as a top priority. The Minister pointed the necessity of a clear roadmap and framework to guide the ministry’s efforts in achieving these ambitious goals.
To meet these objectives, the Minister emphasized the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s human resources.
The committee, comprised of experts with extensive experience in the education sector, is tasked with addressing critical issues hindering progress, including curriculum alignment with contemporary global education standards, addressing infrastructural deficits, ensuring financial autonomy in tertiary institutions, promoting access and equity, fostering research and innovation, and strengthening the government-industry-academic nexus. Global competitiveness of the Nigerian educational system also featured prominently.
The Minister urged the committee to embrace technology and steer towards a digital future, emphasizing that education should not merely exist for its sake but contribute significantly to individual and societal development.
