The federal government has announced plans to address key infrastructure challenges faced by the Federal University of Transportation Daura in Katsina State. These plans include connecting the institution to the national grid to ensure reliable electricity supply and finding lasting solutions to water challenges encountered by students.

The Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, made this disclosure after conducting an inspection of the university’s facilities. He emphasized the importance of addressing electricity, water, and other challenges to enhance the learning experience for students.

Alkali expressed optimism about the university’s future, noting its recent enrollment of over 500 students across 15 courses. He highlighted the significance of interventions from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in facilitating the growth and expansion of the institution.

Addressing the infrastructure challenges, Alkali revealed that the contractor, CCECC, has committed to connecting the university to the national grid. Efforts are also underway to implement a lasting solution to the water problem.

Furthermore, Alkali shared insights into the presidential directive he received upon assuming office as Minister of Transportation. He stated that President Bola Tinubu instructed him to continue and sustain existing contracts and projects in the ministry.

Regarding the establishment of the Federal University of Transportation Daura, Alkali explained the steps taken to address initial challenges. These included appointing a mentor university, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), designated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Additionally, efforts were made to secure funding through CCECC to support academic activities.

Despite not being included in the Federal Government’s 2023 appropriation, President Tinubu approved the university’s inclusion in the 2024 appropriation, demonstrating the government’s commitment to its development.

Alkali provided insights into the university’s academic progress, revealing that over 500 students were admitted across 14 disciplines following accreditation. Lecturers are engaged on a visiting basis to facilitate teaching and learning.

The government’s proactive measures underscore its dedication to addressing infrastructure deficits and promoting quality education at the Federal University of Transportation Daura, ensuring a conducive environment for students and faculty alike.
