The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), along with joint venture partners, launched new engineering design studios and an information and communication technology (ICT) hub at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) on Thursday.

These facilities are part of the Nigerian Content Human Capacity Development (HCD) program, aimed at strengthening institutions and enhancing technical education to meet the demands of the oil and gas industry. The new offerings include two advanced Engineering Design Studios and a 100-seater ICT Lecture Hall equipped with computers and smartboards, designed for collaborative learning.

Additional infrastructure includes a 200KVA diesel generator, water supply systems, and landscaping, ensuring a conducive learning environment.

NCDMB Executive Secretary Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by Dr. Ama Ikuru, emphasized the importance of equipping students with skills for the 4th industrial revolution, including artificial intelligence and data science. He highlighted the board’s ongoing efforts to enhance vocational education.

SPDC Managing Director Osagie Okunbor referred to the project as a significant investment in human capital development, aligning with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act. FUTO was specifically chosen for this initiative to support SPDC’s local operations and enhance the technical capabilities of future graduates.
