The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), in collaboration with joint venture partners, have officially inaugurated engineering design studios and an information and communication technology (ICT) hub at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). This initiative is part of the Nigerian Content Human Capacity Development (HCD) program, which aims to enhance the quality of education and produce skilled manpower for the oil and gas industry. The new facilities include two advanced Engineering Design Studios and a fully equipped 100-seater ICT Lecture Hall, along with supporting infrastructure such as a diesel generator and water supply systems.

During the inauguration, NCDMB Executive Secretary Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe emphasized the necessity of developing technical skills, particularly in light of advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics. He highlighted the board’s commitment to upgrading vocational schools and universities as essential for meeting the evolving demands of the industry. SPDC Managing Director Osagie Okunbor also spoke on the project’s significance, noting the collaboration with partners like NNPCL and TotalEnergies, and the strategic selection of FUTO due to its proximity to SPDC’s Assa North Ohaji South Gas Development Project.

Additionally, plans were announced for the installation of a 40KW solar system to provide sustainable energy for the facility. Bala M. Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPCL, stated that the hub is designed to promote innovation through collaboration among students, researchers, and faculty. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, represented by the Commissioner for Digital Economy, praised the initiative as vital for regional development. FUTO Vice Chancellor Professor Nnenna Nnannaya Oti expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing its alignment with the university’s mission to foster indigenous technology and practical problem-solving.
