Gender Mobile Initiative, a social advocacy group, has praised the Nigerian House of Representatives for passing a new bill to tackle sexual harassment in higher education institutions, calling it a significant step toward safer learning environments.

Executive Director Omowumi Ogunrotimi extended appreciation to Honorable Akin Rotimi, who sponsored the bill, for his commitment to reintroducing the measure, which was passed on Wednesday.

The bill mandates ethical standards to prevent sexual harassment by educators and establishes mechanisms for handling harassment complaints. “This bill’s passage results from years of advocacy involving civil society groups, educational leaders, legal experts, and policymakers,” Gender Mobile stated, recognizing these contributions as crucial to achieving this legislative milestone.

In her response, Yeside Olasimbo, Special Assistant on Women Affairs to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, commended Gender Mobile’s role in advancing the bill and expressed hope for its prompt approval by the Senate.
