The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his decisive action in resolving the leadership crisis at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK).

President Tinubu, on Wednesday, directed the dissolution of the university’s governing council and the removal of its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benard Odoh, and the registrar. The intervention came just three days after MDCAN declared a warning strike to protest the exclusion of medical professionals from vying for the position of Vice Chancellor.

Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu, chairman of the MDCAN branch at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, commended the president for responding promptly to their concerns.

He emphasized the association’s demands, which include re-advertising the UNIZIK Vice Chancellor position to include medical professionals, ensuring uniform payment structures for doctors in universities and parastatals, and addressing arrears from the recent salary structure review.

MDCAN had previously held a press conference and called for the dissolution of the council, the removal of the Vice Chancellor, and reforms to ensure fairness in the appointment process.

The association urged the president to address lingering issues affecting medical professionals across various institutions.
