Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered schools in the Nnewi zone to close for a week to prevent potential violence during the burial of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The move follows a gunmen attack in Nnewi on Wednesday night that left several dead and heightened tension ahead of Friday’s burial in Umuanuka village, Otolo Nnewi. A directive from the state’s education commissioner urged parents to keep children at home and school principals to ensure students stay off the streets in uniform.
While speculation links the incident to Ubah’s funeral, police clarified that the attack resulted from an operation to trail a suspect. Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga explained that stray bullets struck a fuel tank, causing a vehicle to catch fire and injuring two bystanders.
Joint Security Forces (JSF) have been deployed to maintain peace, with authorities urging calm and promising thorough investigations.
