The Abia State Government has announced its commitment to adopting more practical teaching methods for science subjects in secondary schools. Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, made this known on Thursday in Umuahia during the launch of a science competition for science teachers, organized by ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited in collaboration with the state education ministry.

Mr. Ubochi explained that the new approach aims to enhance students’ performance in core science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. He noted that the ongoing science competition would encourage excellence among teachers and significantly improve the academic achievements of senior secondary students in science-related fields.

The commissioner also commended Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to education, highlighting regular salary payments for teachers and investments in educational infrastructure as key achievements. “Abia teachers are now receiving their rewards on earth,” Ubochi remarked, emphasizing the governor’s prioritization of the sector.

Meanwhile, Hope Nwosu, a director in the education ministry, urged the state government to prioritize science teachers in its planned large-scale recruitment of educators. Nwosu also praised the rehabilitation of technical schools but stressed the importance of equipping science laboratories, pointing out that inadequate facilities had previously hindered students’ performance in public schools.
