The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted official recognition for the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology, Oferekpe, making it the 66th state university in Nigeria and the 278th institution within the Nigerian University System. The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja, where NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, presented a recognition letter to Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru.

Prof. Ribadu emphasized that while the university has received recognition, academic activities can only commence following a resource verification process. “We will visit to assess the infrastructure, classrooms, library, and staffing before giving the go-ahead for academic operations,” he said. He also assured the Commission’s support in nurturing the new institution to achieve its goals.

Governor Nwifuru highlighted the university’s establishment in 2021 as part of the state’s efforts to expand access to quality and affordable higher education. He emphasized its role in meeting the technological manpower needs of Ebonyi State and Nigeria. “The world is changing rapidly due to technology, and this university will help address the technological requirements of our state and nation,” the governor stated.

The governor also assured the sustainability of the institution, revealing significant investments in infrastructure, including ongoing construction of the Senate Building, staff quarters, faculty buildings, and hostels. Additionally, he shared that 1,000 students have been awarded scholarships for Master’s and Doctorate programs to build the human capital needed for the university’s development. “We are committed to adequate funding and sustainable growth to ensure the university’s academic excellence,” Nwifuru added.
