The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has lifted its earlier ban on the use of gas cylinders in student hostels, allowing only 3kg cylinders for cooking purposes. The announcement was made by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sa’id Umar, during the orientation ceremony for newly admitted students on Sunday. He explained that the decision to revise the policy followed a review aimed at aligning the university’s practices with those of other institutions, ensuring safety while catering to the students’ cooking needs.

Prof. Umar clarified that while the use of gas cylinders is now permitted, students are restricted to 3kg cylinders only. “Any student found using bigger cylinders will have them confiscated,” he warned, emphasizing the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all residents. In collaboration with the Student Union Government (SUG), the Student Affairs Division also introduced new guidelines for the safe use of gas cylinders in hostels, ensuring that students can cook with minimal risk.

In a related development, Umar Lawal, spokesperson for the Federal Fire Service in Bauchi State, issued a safety warning to students about the risks of fire outbreaks. He highlighted that 90 percent of fire incidents are caused by carelessness, negligence, and ignorance. Lawal urged students to adhere to safety guidelines, avoid overloading electrical appliances, and be vigilant to reduce the chances of fire hazards in the hostels. The new policy shift is seen as a step towards promoting both convenience and safety for students at ATBU.
