Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has unveiled a sweeping initiative aimed at strengthening both education and security across public schools in the state. The reforms, announced Monday during the official flag-off of instructional material distribution, are designed to protect students and teachers while enhancing learning infrastructure.
A key highlight of the initiative is the immediate recruitment of 17,600 security guards—400 for each of the state’s 44 local government areas. The guards will be deployed to public schools to safeguard students, teachers, and school property against emerging security threats. “This decision is part of our commitment to protecting our children and teachers from emerging threats. We cannot allow insecurity to disrupt the education of our future leaders,” Governor Yusuf said.
The recruited guards will undergo specialized training and will be stationed at school gates across the state, working under the coordination of relevant security agencies. The move comes amid growing concerns about the safety of educational institutions in parts of northern Nigeria, where incidents of school abductions and vandalism have occurred in recent years.
Governor Yusuf also launched a World Bank-supported Information and Communication Technology (ICT) program under the AGILE project. This component includes the solarisation of 200 public schools and the provision of 250 computers per school, aimed at boosting digital literacy and providing students with 21st-century learning tools.
In a bid to improve staff welfare and morale, the governor approved a N200 million vehicle loan scheme for primary and secondary school teachers. The initiative is expected to ease transportation challenges for educators and improve overall productivity in the state’s education sector.
The comprehensive reforms reflect the Yusuf administration’s broader strategy to modernize education in Kano, combining security, infrastructure, and digital innovation with staff welfare to create a safe and effective learning environment.
