The newly approved Peaceland University (PU), Enugu, has appointed oil mogul and philanthropist, Arthur Eze as its pioneer Pro-Chancellor.

Eze has accepted the appointment with a show of commitment by announcing a sum of N500 million to support the development of the university.

Chess in Slums commits to children’s educational development

A non-governmental organisation, Chess in Slums Africa, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and promoting initiatives aimed at developing children’s education in the country, noting that the move is aimed at giving every child the opportunity to reach full potential.

The Chief Operations Officer, Emmanuel Abiodun Oke, at this year’s chess for education, which is usually celebrated every Children’s day, said the event was to celebrate the power of education, beauty of chess, and the limitless potential of children.

NANS commends JAMB for sanitising sector

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has assured of its readiness to collaborate with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to sanitise the nation’s education sector.

The body, in a statement by its Vice President, External Affairs, Babatunde Akinteye, said the board’s battle against malpractice and other examination vices is what has kept the system going.

NUC tasks FG on improved varsity funding

The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Abubakar Rasheed, has appealed to the Federal Government to adequately fund tertiary education in Nigeria.

Rasheed, who made the plea at the 2023 National Reunion Conference of Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates Association (UNIFEMGA), said the major challenge confronting the sub-sector is gross underfunding, which affects teaching, learning and research.

A 200-level English Language student of the Lagos State University (LASU), Saheed Sunday, has emerged winner of the Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Library (ZODML) 2023 poetry challenge for undergraduates in the nation’s public universities.

The competition was aimed at boosting creativity among Nigerian students.
Sunday emerged winner out of the 791 students who submitted entries for the competition.

The Vice-Chancellor, Lead City University (LCU), Ibadan, Prof. Kabiru Adeyemo; Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG) Prof. Oluyemi Akinloye and Head of Department, Medical Laboratory Science, Dr. Mufutau Azeez, have urged graduating students of the department to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital revolution and continuous learning to enhance their competence, productivity and professionalism.

The Founder, Emmanuel Osadebe, at the maiden edition of the foundation’s Scholarship and Grant Award, urged the selected students not to allow any obstacle in life to stop them from realising their goals.

New NUC’s CCMAS will rebrand Nigeria’s varsity system —AAU Sec-Gen

THE secretary-general, Association of African Universities (AAU), Professor Olusola Oyewole, has described the new Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), developed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a revolution which has come to rebrand the university system in Nigeria and indeed Africa.

Oyewole, while taking a critical look at the new CCMAS at a programme in Abuja, stressed that the curriculum in use during the colonial era was designed to meet the man-power needs and recruitment by the colonial masters into public service.

NSSEC to deploy digital pedagogy in secondary schools

THE National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has expressed its readiness to partner with the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in facilitating the deployment of digital pedagogy in senior secondary schools in Nigeria.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the chairperson of the commission, Ambassador Nimota Akanbi, had recently met with the outgoing Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ibrahim Pantami, in his office to seek out areas of collaboration towards the actualisation of the deployment of digital pedagogy in secondary schools across the country.

KWASU scholar wins $24,000 international scholarship grant

Dr Rashidat Akande of the Department of Economics and Development Studies, Kwara State University has won a $24,000 CAD International Scholarship Grant of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship – Advanced Scholars – West Africa (QES-AS-WA) scheme.

In a statement by Director of Relations in the university, Saeedat Aliyu, Dr Akande won the QES-AS-WA scholarship award under the year 2022 with the theme, “Wurin ta na yin rubutu – Her own room to write.”

OBJ, Olowu seek partnership with foreign varsities on tertiary education devt in Nigeria

NIGERIA’S former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the Olowu of Owu, Oba (Prof) Saka Matemilola, have sought partnership with some notable universities in the United Kingdom and the United States of America (USA), for the advancement of education in Nigeria.

This was disclosed by Oba Matemilola, during a press briefing at a reception organised in his honour by Owu sons and daughters, shortly after his return from an overseas trip.
