Provost lists four-year plan for institute

Provost, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, Dr. Wahab Ademola Azeez, has identified some of the challenges confronting his administration to include poor budgetary allocation, land constraints, insufficient manpower as well as infrastructural facilities for teaching.

Azeez, who recently commenced another term of four years, also outlined his plans on how to move the institution forward. Speaking at a media briefing, the rector said the college pioneered the establishment of the Technical Teacher Education Programme in Nigeria.

Dansol launches virtual school to boost personalised learning

Dansol High School has unveiled a virtual school in conjunction with Edves, an education online portal, to enhance students’ educational opportunity and broaden their learning experience.

The initiative is expected to transform teaching and learning, extending them beyond the traditional classroom. The initiative, tagged ‘Personalised Learning’ (PL) by Edves, allows teachers to create engaging content and provide students with access to pre-recorded lessons, participate in live classes and ensure a comprehensive and interactive learning experience.

UNILAG unveils centre for clinical trials

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), College of Medicine has inaugurated the Centre for Clinical Trials, Research and Implementation Science (CCTRIS), to enhance capacity in medical research.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, said Nigeria and Africa at large have not made great advances in clinical trials.
Ogunsola, who was represented by Prof. Lucian Chukwu, said the centre is coming at the right time to enhance research works in clinical trials and implementation science.

Six students to represent Nigeria at Microsoft World Championship in U.S.

Six students drawn from various secondary schools will represent Nigeria at the 2023 Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship (MOSWC) scheduled to be held in Disneyland, Orlando, Florida in America.

The competition, which is designed to test students’ capabilities in the use of Microsoft, would take place between July 30 and August 2 and is a yearly event that attracts students from over 150 countries.

Sudan crisis: JAMB rolls out modalities for absorption of returnee students

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rolled out modalities for the absorption of returnee students from war-torn countries into Nigerian universities.

Head, Public Affairs of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in a statement on Wednesday night, said the modalities were follow-ups to the high-level meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), Federal Ministry of Health, JAMB, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), National Universities Commission (NUC), and other critical stakeholders, on the integration of returnee Nigerian students from war-torn countries into the nation’s tertiary education system.

Uzodimma charges Imo poly new students on cultism, exam malpractice

GOVERNOR Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has warned new students of Imo State Polytechnic, Omuma, against involvement in cultism, examination malpractice and alcoholism.

Speaking at the 42nd matriculation ceremony of the 2022/2023 ND1 students held at Omuma in Oru East Local Government Area of the state, the governor admonished the new intakes to be focused and studious while calling on old students to be good examples to the new ones.

UNIZIK lecturers counter Ngige, say ‘we partook in 2022 ASUU national strike’

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), chapter, has called on the government and Nigerians to disregard what they described as false claims by the former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, that ASUU members in three faculties of the institution namely: Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences and Medicine did not partake in the 2022 ASUU‘s national strike.

According to a statement jointly signed by the chairman, ASUU UNIZIK, Mr Stephen Ufoaroh, and the secretary, Mr Peter Okoye, the claim by Dr Chris Ngige, that lecturers in the aforementioned three faculties did not participate in the strike is totally false, misleading.

DE registration: JAMB bars institutions running unapproved programmes

MANY tertiary institutions running unapproved programmes were denied access to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s portal for the purpose of purchasing Direct Entry forms in the just-concluded Direct Entry (DE) registration.

Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, who revealed this at a meeting with the leadership of Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN), justified the action of the board, noting that the board only granted access to institutions or organisations that complied with guidelines.

Gov Bello charges committee on immediate kickoff of new university in Okun

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has inaugurated the implementation committee for the establishment of a state university in Okunland.

This is just as the governor charged the committee to ensure speedy action in order for the university to commence academic activities immediately.

Adopt 65 years retirement age policy for Lagos teachers, NUT urges Sanwo-Olu

The Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) has expressed concern over the delay by the Lagos State government in increasing the retirement age of teachers in public schools from 60 to 65 years or their duration of service from 35 to 40 years, saying the delay is becoming too long.

The National President of NUT, Titus Amber, raised the concern in Ikorodu at the opening session of the ongoing Trade Union Education Workshop organised by the Lagos State chapter of NUT for its executive committee members from the local government branches to the state levels.

The Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, has emphasised the need to strengthen Mathematics and Science Education, SMASE, and phonics training for teachers nationwide.

The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, who made the remark at a workshop to build teachers’ capacity in Maths and Science, explained that SMASE and Jolly Phonics have been implemented over 10 years in the country’s UBE programme.

Tragedy as Afe Babalola Varsity Student Slumps, Dies After Final Exams.

A 500-level mechanical engineering student of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, slumped and died after his final exams.

The deceased student, Ayomide Oduntan, was rushed to the school hospital after he slumped but was declared dead.

The school management in a statement disclosed that an autopsy was carried out on Oduntan’s body but the result is not yet out.

2023 Budget: Street lights allocation surpasses schools, primary health centres by 4.9%

The Federal Government’s budget for 2023 is still drawing more controversy as a fiscal policy advocate group noted that allocation for installation of street lights is far more than the combined sum allocated to education and primary health centres across the country by 4.9 percent.

BudgIT Nigeria, a Non Governmental Organisation, NGO, in a report sent to Vanguard stated: “Shocking figures reveal that an exorbitant amount of N81.7 billion has been allocated to the construction of solar street lights in the 2023 budget. Surprisingly, this allocation surpasses the total funds allocated to schools and primary health centers, which stand at N77.9 billion and N3.1 billion, respectively.
