The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), offering relief and anticipation for over 1.9 million candidates who sat for the exams across more than 23,000 secondary schools nationwide.

Dr. Amos Dangut, WAEC’s Head of National Office, announced the release during a media briefing, noting that the examination process was completed successfully despite facing some logistical challenges. “Today, I am happy to announce to you that all the processes leading to the release of the results have been concluded,” he said.

However, the announcement came with a sobering revelation: there has been a 33.8 percent decline in candidates’ overall performance compared to previous years. The sharp drop in results has reignited concerns among education stakeholders about the country’s learning outcomes and academic preparedness.

In response to the release, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) issued a call for the Federal Government to review its current policies affecting the WASSCE. The association stressed that recent policy directions could be undermining educational standards and called for collaborative reforms to ensure students are better equipped for future assessments.
