The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a groundbreaking initiative that will allow students to retake failed subjects from the WASSCE much sooner—beginning January 2025—offering them a lifeline to salvage their academic dreams without waiting an entire year.
Dubbed the WASSCE PC1, the new program is aimed at giving students a second chance to improve their grades and qualify for university admissions within the same academic cycle. The exams are scheduled to run from January 24 to February 15, 2025.
Speaking on the new development during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, said the early resit opportunity was designed to fast-track students’ progress and reduce bottlenecks in the admission process.
“Students who have checked their results and discovered they need to resit one or two papers have until January 8 to register through our website or any WAEC-accredited internet café,” Kapi explained.
To further assist candidates preparing for the exams, Kapi revealed that WAEC would be releasing Chief Examiners’ Reports earlier than usual, providing students with detailed insights into common mistakes and recommendations for improvement.
“This is not just about rewriting; it’s about understanding why you failed and how to do better,” he added.
Importantly, Kapi clarified that even students whose results were cancelled due to irregularities—but who haven’t been barred from future sittings—are eligible to participate in the PC1 exams. The exams will be held in regional capitals, where logistical support can better accommodate the expected turnout.
WAEC has already begun promoting the initiative across multiple platforms including banners, the council’s website, and the WAEC results checker portal to ensure both students and parents are well informed.
With registration now open and a tight deadline ahead, WAEC is urging all eligible candidates to take full advantage of the new opportunity.
“This is your chance to bounce back. Don’t miss it,” Kapi said.
