The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education Examination Bodies has expressed strong support for ongoing efforts by NECO, WAEC, NABTEB, and other examination bodies to clamp down on examination malpractice across the country.
During an oversight visit to some secondary schools in Abuja where NECO exams were being conducted, the committee—led by Mr. Oboku Oforji (PDP, Bayelsa)—praised the examination bodies for the visible improvements in integrity and conduct.
The committee visited Federal Government Boys College, Apo, and Model Secondary School, Maitama, as part of its constitutional mandate to monitor the activities of education institutions and ensure adherence to standards.
Speaking to journalists, Oforji said the tour revealed impressive reforms and renewed commitment to examination integrity, particularly under the leadership of NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi.
“We are very proud of what NECO is doing. Yes, WAEC is also our own, but NECO is our national pride. What we’ve seen today gives us hope. From the strict validation of candidates using photo-based master sheets to the vigilant supervision of attendance, the process was orderly and secure,” he said.
He stressed that sustaining such measures is crucial to restoring public confidence in the credibility of national exams. “What we’ve witnessed—if maintained—will lead us to a better tomorrow. We are hopeful. We are committed to a better educational future,” Oforji noted.
The committee chairman also commended the students’ discipline and focus during the exams, as well as the commitment of NECO staff and supervisors.
He assured the public that the National Assembly stands ready to support all examination bodies through legislative collaboration and policy reforms that will enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.
“We are ready to collaborate with WAEC, NECO, JAMB, NABTEB, and others. The ongoing reforms, if sustained, will definitely improve the educational sector. We believe in what we saw today. It’s a good sign for Nigeria,” he concluded.
