UNIBEN Bans Sign-Out Celebrations, Warns of Severe Sanctions for Violators

The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced a total ban on all forms of sign-out celebrations by graduating students. The directive, contained in a circular signed by the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, on Tuesday in Benin City, reaffirmed an earlier Senate resolution prohibiting such activities within the university’s campuses. The management warned that students who flout the directive risk disciplinary measures, including rustication, expulsion, or even withdrawal of their certificates.

According to the circular, the university would no longer tolerate practices such as signing on T-shirts, playing loud music, or parading around campus in celebration after examinations. It stressed that no form of disorderly conduct or unauthorised gatherings will be permitted during or after examinations. The circular also noted that unauthorised vehicles would be restricted from entering the campuses throughout the final week of the second-semester examinations.

The Registrar further stated that large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes would not be allowed, and photographers are prohibited from erecting photo stands or galleries for such celebrations. He said the measures were part of management’s efforts to maintain order, discipline, and academic decorum within the university environment.

Mr. Bobola also appealed to parents and guardians of final-year students to stay away from the campuses during the last days of examinations to avoid contributing to congestion or disorder. He reiterated that any violation of the directive would attract strict disciplinary action, stressing that the university was committed to preserving its values of excellence, discipline, and peaceful conduct as the examination period draws to a close.
