Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, has received more than N8 billion in direct allocations from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for various development interventions over the years, underscoring the institution’s strong partnership with the Fund in advancing tertiary education infrastructure.

This was disclosed at the weekend by Rt. Hon. Sunday Adeyemi Adepoju, a member of TETFund’s Board of Trustees representing the South-West Zone, during a visit to Owo, Ondo State. Adepoju also commissioned five newly completed projects worth N1.72 billion.

He commended both past and present administrations of the polytechnic for their diligence in executing TETFund-sponsored projects, noting that none of the interventions on campus had been abandoned or left in poor condition.

Adepoju, however, cautioned state governments against establishing new tertiary institutions without clear funding strategies, stressing that TETFund’s role is to provide complementary support—not to bear the full financial burden of running such institutions.

“We are assembled here today for the commissioning of five iconic projects sponsored by TETFund, valued at N1,725,730,426.38. From inception till date, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic has received N8,186,776,383.10 for infrastructure-based projects. Out of this, N5,576,638,910.74 has been accessed, leaving a balance of N2,610,137,472.37, most of which is already committed,” Adepoju stated.

He emphasized the Board’s commitment to ensuring that no TETFund project is abandoned, explaining that recent allocations were approved to assist institutions struggling to complete distressed projects.

“Our resolve is to ensure that interventions are sustained and improved upon so that our institutions can execute bigger, more impactful projects that make them globally competitive,” he said.

Representing TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Arc. Babatunde Olajide, described the completion of the projects as proof of a shared dedication to providing quality learning environments in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Echono congratulated the polytechnic on hosting its combined convocation for 12 graduating sets (12th to 23rd), acknowledging the challenges posed by current economic conditions and fluctuating markets which have affected project delivery timelines.

He, however, praised institutions that have demonstrated resilience and prudence in completing their projects despite the financial constraints.

“As a Fund, we will continue to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by delivering innovative interventions that strengthen teaching, learning, and research, while equipping students with the technical skills required for today’s workforce,” Echono said.
