Implementation of new varsity curriculum will boost graduates’ employability skills — NUC boss

The Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki, has revealed that the Commission is working assiduously with key stakeholders to change the narrative on the dissonance between skills and employment potentials of graduates from Nigerian universities.

He added that one of the primary objectives of the recently launched Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) by the Commission, when implemented, would address the skill gaps and make Nigerian graduates employable and employers of labour.

My little sons inspired my new children’s book − Balogun-Kuku

Author and visual artist, Kanyinsola Balogun-Kuku, said her new children’s book ‘The Boy Who Grew Backwards’ was inspired by his two little sons.

Sokoto students hail Gov Aliyu over payment of tuition fees

Sokoto State Students Association, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, chapter has commended the state governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for the payment of their school fees.

The chairman of the association, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu, while addressing a press conference on Sunday said the payment covers hundred percent payment of over 7,000 indigenes of the state studying at the school.

Institute canvasses online learning

The Accra Institute of Technology, Ghana, has said the open university approach will improve enrollment and broaden access to tertiary education in Africa.

Speaking while introducing the institute in Lagos, the founder of AIT, Prof. Clement Dzidonu, explained that it offered conventional campus-based degree programmes where students could come to campus and have face-to-face lectures, adding that open university programmes were unique in Africa.

The National Universities Commission has approved new programmes at master and doctorate levels for Augustine University, Ilara- Epe, Lagos.

The programmes are Bachelor of Nursing Science, Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering, and postgraduate diploma, masters and doctorate programmes in Computer Science.

Don seeks peace studies in curriculum

A Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Jos, Jeff Doki has asked the Federal Government to expand the academic curriculum for conflict management and peace studies in Universities and tertiary institutions While encouraging Universities to initiate academic prizes for excellence at the departmental and faculty levels to encourage students to read, he said Nigeria had been retarded because of poor reading culture.

According to him, the failure of the United Nations and the global community to effectively respond to war and genocide have made it apparent that the existing mechanisms for preventing war and conflict are inadequate or non-existent.

Why Nigeria needs University of Mining and Geosciences – Plateau Senator

A bill in the National Assembly which seeks the upgrade of the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences NIMG), Jos, to the status of a Federal University of Mining and Geosciences has passed the first reading.
Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central who sponsored the bill says making the Institute a University would position the nation’s mining sector and ensure the diversification of Nigeria’s economy, deepen research on mineral exploration, exploitation and instill knowledge of many facets of mining resource management, including geosciences and engineering in citizens.

Ex-NECO registrar appointed pioneer VC of Kano varsity

The Board of Trustees of Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu University Kano has appointed a former Registrar of the National Examination Council, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the university.

This was contained in a statement by the administrative secretary of the university, Malam Yusuf Datti, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH on Monday.
