Ten-year-old Halima Aliyu from Sokoto State knows what it’s like to be a street hawker. For some years, she moved from place to place selling food, while her peers were in school.

“I had the impression that school wasn’t necessary, but now, I know better,” Halima said, as she looked back on the past. “Now I realise how vulnerable a young female child is to dangers associated with street hawking. I now know the importance of education.”

RCA launch Virgil Abloh scholarship for Black British students

A scholarship for underrepresented communities in creative and design industries honouring the fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who died last year, has been launched by the Royal College of Art (RCA).

The RCA Virgil Abloh Scholarship is to be offered annually to “an extraordinarily talented, but financially restricted, Black British student”.

The Department for Education (DfE) has been found responsible for an “unacceptable” breach of data protection laws over betting firms using children’s information on a student database for age-verification checks.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said there was “prolonged misuse” of pupil information on a database that holds the details of up to 28 million students.

The Federal Government has commenced payment of the 8-month salary backlog to some lecturers who are members of Congress of University Academics (CONUA), the breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

A member of CONUA and lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, who spoke anonymously on Sunday night, said the leadership of the union has already got a hint from the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.
